Spain's Civil Protection Chief Urges Support for Climate Emergency Pact

Virginia Barcones, head of Spain's Civil Protection and Emergency agency, called for support of the State Pact on Climate Emergency, which was proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in September 2024. In an interview with Europa Press, she stated that "the only enemy to defeat are the flames and torrential rains," urging all levels of government and sectors to unite efforts. The interview was conducted before a wildfire in Los Gallardos, Almería, which has claimed 12 lives. The pact aims to coordinate national, regional, and local responses to climate-related emergencies, including wildfires and floods. Barcones emphasized the need for shared responsibility across competencies to address the increasing frequency and severity of such disasters.
