Osmangazi Bridge Saves 211 Billion Lira in Fuel and Time Over 10 Years
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the Osmangazi Bridge, which opened to traffic on July 1, 2016, has saved 211 billion lira in fuel and time costs over its first decade. The bridge, spanning the Gulf of İzmit, is a key component of the Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir highway project, reducing travel time between Istanbul and İzmir from 10 hours to 6 hours. The savings are calculated based on reduced fuel consumption and shorter travel times for the millions of vehicles that have used the bridge since its opening. The bridge has also contributed to lower carbon emissions and improved logistics efficiency in the region.
Global Impact
The Osmangazi Bridge's decade-long performance demonstrates the economic viability of large-scale infrastructure in emerging markets, offering a case study for similar projects in other developing nations. It has strengthened Turkey's domestic transport network, reducing logistics costs and supporting industrial output in the Marmara region.
