Abu Dhabi's Masdar buys 49.99% stake in Repsol's Spanish renewable portfolio for 150 mln euros

Repsol and Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) have signed an agreement for Masdar to acquire a 49.99% stake in a portfolio of renewable energy assets in Spain for approximately 150 million euros. The transaction values the portfolio at 849 million euros. The portfolio includes 705 megawatts (MW) of operational capacity, comprising 13 wind farms (402 MW) and six solar photovoltaic parks (303 MW), all of which entered operation in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, the portfolio includes over 0.5 GW of potential growth from hybridization projects involving wind, solar, and battery storage. The deal is expected to reduce Repsol's net debt by 700 million euros. This marks another renewable energy move by Abu Dhabi in Spain, following Masdar's previous investments in the country.

Global Impact

Economically, the deal highlights the growing role of Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds in financing Europe's energy transition, providing capital for renewable expansion while reducing debt for European energy majors. Politically, it strengthens UAE-Spain bilateral ties and aligns with EU renewable energy targets.
